Fundementalevangelicals are the very cult members they denounce and fear, given the accepted definition of "cult", with their bible thumping, context twisting, self righteous gas bag pontification...I know them well, I was suckered into being part of their reprehensible ilk for 26 years.

Thanks for the comment. Repentance is a deep and radical change of mind that transforms what we see as real and true. It is a very humbling experience to realize that what we were basing our life on as the "truth" is a lie. It often brings with it deep feelings of feeling foolish. The depth of our remorse is not a measure of the degree of our repentance, If it does not change our life's orientation, then all the sadness, sorrow and remorse in the world is just so much emotion. The key is that repenting is more about waking up to what Christ has already done than a pre-condition of Christ doing something as a result. Like the Elder Brother's blindness to what he already had was the problem, not changing his father's mind about his acceptance.

C. S. Lewis also said this in Mere Christianity:

So, what is repentance? Listen to this thought-provoking statement from the late author C.S. Lewis:

“Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who must lay down his arms. Laying down your arms, surrendering, saying you are sorry, realizing that you have been on the wrong track, and getting ready to start life over again from the ground floor—that is the only way out of a hole. This process of surrender, this movement full astern, is what Christians call repentance.”

When we get into arguments about the finer points of theology it is time for us to stop and say, "It's all about Jesus."

Arguing has no place in the Kingdom of God.

If we can't love our brothers and sisters in Christ who we can see, God says, how can we love Him?

I also think it really grieves the Father's heart to see His kids fighting. I know as as mom that when my kids fight I just hate it. It gives me so much joy to see them enjoying each other and working things out together, giving each other understanding, compassion, and if they do have a disagreement, they do it peacefully.

Good stuff. This reminds me of a blog that I read about "repentance". And what it truly means. We tend to think that repentance means to turn around from our sin and never sin again. And in a way it does. But in the blog it talked about repenting meaning to "change your mind". Basically what I receive of it is that our human condition is that we keep feeling like we have to work for our salvation. We keep forgetting that the task has already been done. Jesus died and resurrected. Nothing we can DO will get our salvation. We must repent or change our mind and realize that it's already been done. "It is finished". We must live it out, and we will have works because of our faith, not the other way around. This is something that I've still got to learn, and it's definitely a process. Thank you for sharing. Blessings

'Slowly, surely and painfully I’ve come to recognize that my theology has for the most of my life been off-center. That is, it has been more experience-centered than grounded on a Trinitarian understanding of grace.'
Paul for me a puzzle that I've been struggling for three decades to put together without having the 'big picture', came together when the revelation of the 'Trinitarian understanding of grace'came to me!

@Sue- what a delight to hear about the journey that you and Ray are taking. I have to confess that I would not have guessed about your openness to being outside the old theology box; happy as I can be but surprised at Father's humor. Of course, there are some others who are surprised about my journey.

I don't know if Ray has read any of Thomas Torrance's theology but he might find it interesting that Torrance was quite interested in removing the unnecessary barrier between scientific thinking and good theology. I'm climbing a steep and energizing learning curve and one day I'll tackle his book Space, Time and the Incarnation.

BTW, we are brining Paul Young and Baxter Kruger to KC the weekend of May 20-21. Both will be speaking and Baxter's new book will likely be newly off the press. I think the title will be "Revisiting the Shack." He ties Paul's general theology about the Trinity back to the Nicene Fathers in a wonderful way to make it all more accessible to a larger audience. We'll have info out soon about time, location and tickets. It will at least an all day session with them. Come on up and join us.
Blessings

Thanks, Dr. P. Refreshing challenge in a church culture that typically emphasizes transactional-model growth (regardless of theological traditions, by the way). A western thing, more than an evangelical thing, perhaps?

Finding myself seemingly forced to slow down the pace; this speaks to a potential reason why.

Would love to reconnect with you when you are in KC with any time open in your schedule. Miss you.
